This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) is designed specifically for applicants proposing research that does not involve leading an independent clinical trial, a clinical trial feasibility study, or an ancillary study to a clinical trial. Applicants to this FOA are permitted to propose research experience in a clinical trial led by a mentor or co-mentor. Applicants proposing a clinical trial or an ancillary clinical trial as lead investigator, should apply to the companion FOA PAR-.The purpose of the Fogarty Emerging Global Leader Award is to provide research support and protected time (three to five years) to an early career research scientist from a low- or middle-income country (LMIC) who holds a junior faculty position at an LMIC academic or research institution, as defined by the World Bank (http://data.worldbank.org/about/country-classifications/country-and-lending-groups , including low-income, lower-middle-income, and upper-middle-income countries). This intensive, mentored research career development experience is expected to lead to an independently funded research career at the LMIC institution or in another LMIC. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites applications from LMIC scientists from any health-related discipline who propose career development activities and a research project that is relevant to the health priorities of their country under the mentorship of LMIC and U.S. mentors.
Background
The Fogarty Emerging Global Leader Award is a funding opportunity designed to support early career research scientists from low- or middle-income countries (LMICs) who hold junior faculty positions at LMIC academic or research institutions.

The award aims to provide research support and protected time for three to five years, facilitating an intensive, mentored research career development experience that is expected to lead to an independently funded research career. This initiative invites applications from LMIC scientists in any health-related discipline, focusing on projects relevant to their country's health priorities under the mentorship of both LMIC and U.S. mentors.

Grant Details
The award will provide salary support of up to $100,000 per year for the recipient's salary, requiring a minimum of 75% effort.

Additionally, up to $40,000 per year may be allocated for research development support, which can cover non-degree-related tuition, research-related expenses, travel for research purposes, and communication costs between mentors and grantees.

The total project period must be between three and five years. Applicants must propose a systematic plan that includes targeted activities and a research project relevant to their country's health priorities. The proposed activities should enhance the candidate's capabilities in advanced research methodology, analysis, data management, scientific presentation, manuscript writing, and grant writing.

Eligibility Requirements
Eligible applicants must be citizens or permanent residents of an LMIC as defined by the World Bank and hold a primary appointment at an academic junior faculty position at an LMIC institution for at least one year.

Candidates must possess at least a master's degree with a research thesis; those with doctoral training are preferred. Individuals who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States are not eligible.

Period of Performance
The period of performance for the grant is between three to five years.

Grant Value
The total value of the grant includes up to $100,000 per year for salary support and up to $40,000 per year for research development support.

Place of Performance
The grant activities should primarily take place in the applicant's home country within the LMIC.

FIC's Country Eligibility Notice (NOT-TW-12-011 Notice of Change in Country Eligibility for Fogarty International Training Grants ) applies to this NOFO and states that for competing and re-competing research training grant applications (including the K43 mechanism), with the exception of Sub-Saharan African countries, FIC will no longer accept applications from, or applications that involve training of scientists from upper-middle-income countries that are also members of the G20 major economies (http://www.g20.org/en/members).
