Description
The Small Diameter Bomb program, managed by the Air Force, aims to enhance the precision strike capabilities of various aircraft platforms. The initiative's primary goal is to increase the number of targets that can be engaged per sortie while minimizing collateral damage. This is achieved through the development and procurement of the GBU-39/B Small Diameter Bomb Increment I (SDB I), designed to meet specific warfighter requirements such as precision munitions capability, effectiveness against fixed and stationary targets, and reduced susceptibility to countermeasures.

Objectives of the program include integrating the SDB I across multiple aircraft platforms such as the F-15E, F-22A, F-16C/D Block 30/40/50, F-35A, B-1, A-10, B-52, B-21, MQ-9, and AC-130W/J. The SDB I has completed Initial Operational Test and Evaluation (IOT&E) and has been in Full Rate Production since December 2006. Additionally, variants like the GBU-39A/B Focused Lethality Munition (FLM) and GBU-39B/B Laser SDB have been developed to provide low collateral damage options and enhanced targeting capabilities through laser guidance.

Procurement efforts for the SDB I include acquiring weapons and weapon containers as a system to support current combat operations and replenish used munitions. The program also invests in infrastructure upgrades such as digital environments and security systems to sustain its capabilities. It addresses potential issues related to Diminishing Manufacturing Sources (DMS) through studies and supplier replacement strategies to ensure future production capabilities.

The strategy involves leveraging common component development with other weapon systems to reduce redundant costs. It also includes addressing performance deficiencies identified in the system through targeted investments. The program aims to maintain production rates that meet operational requirements while accommodating variations due to negotiated options or pricing bands.
