Description
The MLRS Mods program is focused on enhancing the capabilities of the Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) for the Army. The primary goal is to upgrade existing M270A1 launchers to the M270A2 configuration. This includes improvements such as the Improved Armored Cab, Bradley commonality enhancements, and a Common Fire Control System. These upgrades aim to extend the operational life of these launchers to 2050 and beyond, ensuring they remain effective in modern combat scenarios. The program also supports the Army's Long Range Precision Fires modernization effort by providing precision strike capabilities at extended ranges.
One of the key objectives of the MLRS Mods program is to address obsolescence and ensure system robustness against emerging threats. This includes integrating Assured Position, Navigation, and Timing capabilities into the launchers, enhancing compliance with statutory requirements and improving resistance to GPS jamming. The update involves modernizing hardware components such as Digital GPS Anti-jam Receivers and NavStrike-M kits. Additionally, efforts focus on recurring obsolescence mitigation activities, maintaining commonality with Bradley chassis, and updating fire control systems.
The program emphasizes logistics and training support to ensure seamless integration of upgrades into operational units. This involves updating Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals, procuring system-specific training devices, and supporting fielding, overhaul, reset, and test activities. Product Integration Support provides essential stakeholder assistance from organizations like Aviation and Missile Command and Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command. Software Integration Support ensures that software remains viable against evolving threats.
The MLRS Mods program aims to maintain a fleet of upgraded launchers equipped with advanced features for enhanced crew survivability and operational effectiveness. By leveraging contract negotiations and international partnerships, the Army seeks to optimize costs while continuing modernization efforts. This initiative aligns with broader defense objectives to support homeland defense missions, domestic emergency responses, and military support to civil authorities as outlined in Section 1815 of the FY 2008 National Defense Authorization Act.
