3080F - Other Procurement, Air Force
Description
The Medium Tactical Vehicle program within the Air Force is focused on acquiring military specification vehicles capable of operating in challenging terrains. These vehicles, such as Cargo Trucks, Wreckers, Dump Trucks, Tractors, Mobilizers, and Medium Tactical Trailers, play a crucial role in operations like line haul, mobility, resupply, maintenance, recovery, construction, and civil engineering support. The aim is to boost the operational capabilities of units like Combat Communication Units, Air Support Operation Squadrons (ASOS), Explosive Ordinance Disposal units (EOD), and other mission-critical groups across the Air Force.
A key objective is to ensure these tactical vehicles are equipped with features like armor and winch systems to meet diverse mission needs. The strategy involves acquiring 32 vehicles in FY 2025 to support installation and unit mission requirements for Air Force personnel. This acquisition aligns with the needs identified by the 441 Vehicle Support Chain Operations Squadron (VSCOS) under guidelines outlined in AFI 24-302, Vehicle Management. The priority model used considers factors such as vehicle depreciation, service life projections, cumulative sustainment costs, and mission priorities.
The program also addresses specific requirements for specialized units like the M1297 Ground Mobility Vehicle (GMV) 1.1 and Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV). The GMV is designed to fill a ground mobility capability gap identified by SOCOM and is primarily used by Air Force Tactical Air Control Party (TACP) and Special Operations forces. Meanwhile, the ISV enhances speed and maneuverability for a 9-person squad with associated equipment in close battle areas. These vehicles are vital for supporting dispersed wide area security and providing commanders with new maneuver options.
Additionally, the program considers potential fluctuations in unit costs due to factors such as inflation and supply chain issues affecting parts and labor prices. For example, M Series Trucks and Tractors have experienced significant price increases due to these challenges. The procurement plan remains flexible to accommodate changes in contract pricing and additional user requirements like specialized trailer towing packages or mission-specific attachments for construction vehicles. This adaptability ensures that the Medium Tactical Vehicle program continues to effectively meet evolving operational demands.
