Description
SMART-T (SPACE) is a critical component of the Army's modernization priorities, specifically supporting the Army Network Modernization Strategy Line of Effort (LOE) 1, Unified Network. The program aims to provide worldwide beyond line of sight resilient communication for the current and future tactical communications network. SMART-T is the Army's only protected satellite terminal, offering robust anti-jam, protected communications capability against Electronic Warfare (EW) attacks or other contested environments. It also provides large throughput satellite capability with low probability of interception and low probability of detection (LPI/LPD) to avoid being targeted for destruction, jamming, or eavesdropping. The program involves a 2-tiered approach addressing the continuance of the SMART-T terminal capability: CECOM Integrated Logistics Support Center (ILSC) is mitigating obsolescence through sustainment efforts, while the Program Office is modernizing in accordance with the Transmission CPD.
The SMART-T program is integrated onto a High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), operating in a standalone configuration. It uses the AEHF satellite constellation, providing the US Army with its highest level of protected communications and fully interoperable communications with the AEHF and MILSTAR terminals of other services. The program is designated as an ACAT II DoD Space Program and has transitioned to Sustainment under CECOM ILSC in 2QFY18. The Program Office continues Life Cycle Management through tech refresh, software upgrades, and operator training. The Approved Acquisition Objective (AAO) is 324 terminals plus 15 terminals procured for the DoD Special Users; Army Procurement Objective (APO) is 278; ACAT Level II (Inactive). Overall, the program aims to ensure uninterrupted voice and data communications in challenging environments and support the Army's modernization priorities in tactical communications network.
