Description
The SMART-T (SPACE) program is a critical component of the Army's efforts to modernize its communication capabilities. This initiative supports the Army Network Modernization Strategy, specifically focusing on the Unified Network line of effort. The primary objective of SMART-T is to provide resilient, beyond line-of-sight communication capabilities that are protected against electronic warfare and other contested environments. This system is essential for maintaining uninterrupted voice and data communications, even in scenarios involving nuclear scintillation.

SMART-T stands out as the Army's only large throughput satellite terminal with low probability of interception and detection, which helps avoid targeting for destruction, jamming, or eavesdropping. The system is integrated onto a High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV), allowing it to operate independently. To address evolving requirements outlined in the Transmission Systems Capabilities Production Document, the Army is pursuing a two-tiered approach: sustaining current capabilities through CECOM Integrated Logistics Support Center efforts and modernizing the system in line with new architectural demands.

The program utilizes the Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) satellite constellation, ensuring high-level protected communications for the U.S. Army. Moreover, SMART-T facilitates interoperability with AEHF and MILSTAR terminals used by other military branches such as the Air Force, Navy, and Marine Corps. Designated as an ACAT II DoD Space Program, SMART-T transitioned to sustainment under CECOM ILSC in 2018.

The Program Office continues to manage its lifecycle through technology refreshes, software upgrades, and operator training. The Approved Acquisition Objective for SMART-T includes 324 terminals plus an additional 15 for DoD Special Users, while the Army Procurement Objective is set at 278 units. Although there is no request for FY 2025, previous allocations have supported these objectives by ensuring that SMART-T remains a vital component of the Army's communication infrastructure. The program's focus on modernization and sustainment underscores its importance in maintaining operational readiness and effectiveness in diverse environments.
