Overview
Sub Description
PURPOSE
The purpose of this subcontract is to create a short step-by-step guidance document to facilitate uptake of the results ofa comprehensive literature review of publications documenting efforts over the past 15 years to engage stakeholders around key biodiversity conservation goals.
The Center for Biodiversity and Conservation (CBC) at the American Museum of Natural History proposes to engage its proficiency in community engagement and stakeholder
capacity development and its expertise in critical analysis and synthesis to create a short step
by-step guidance document to facilitate uptake of the results of a comprehensive literature
review of publications documenting efforts over the past 15 years to engage stakeholders
around key biodiversity conservation goals. This concise document will provide USAID
Mission staff programming biodiversity funds with in-depth guidance that is based on the
peer-reviewed literature on key steps, tools, and practices for effectively engaging
stakeholders in biodiversity conservation projects. This product will contribute to USAID's
rich array of resources on stakeholder engagement by summarizing best practices from the literature that are directly relevant to conservation programming; highlighting practices that enhance achievement of programmatic outcomes; and complementing the existing
Biodiversity How-To Guides that support programming in USAID. This product adds value
to the body of findings on this topic developed by the CBC for USAID during FYI 6 by better positioning those findings for use in USAID operating units and by enhancing the scope of
the literature review to include existing how-to support on stakeholder engagement.
STATEMENT OF WORK AND DELIVERABLES
The MI research consultant is tasked with the following:
Task 1: Work in consultation with the Measuring Impact (MI) team to design the project's scope, approach, implementation, and synthesis, building on results from previous
literature searches and synthesis the consultant has conducted on the topic of stakeholder engagement for biodiversity conservation. The resultant two-page summary of the review protocol will also establish how data will be shared between the CBC and the MI team.
Deliverable 1: A two-page summary of the review protocol
Task 2: In order to design the main components and structure of the guide, develop an initial draft proposal based on the recently published How-To Guides for USAID Biodiversity frogramming and the supplemental guides that are in preparation. To complement this initial draft, and once the review protocol has been finalized, conduct a targeted search, using keywords designed to return literature on how-tos and guidelines on stakeholder engagement for biodiversity conservation goals, across a range of databases and media. Search the Science Citation Index Expanded, Google Scholar, and the CBC's extensive library of gray literature on conservation projects worldwide. Assemble a bibliographic database of publications (including scholarly literature and grey literature), captured in reference manager compatible format such as EndN ote. The CBC has institutional access to a range of academic databases and to EndNote software, serving as an in-kind contribution of several thousand dollars to this proposal since access to these resources will not need to be purchased.
Deliverable 2: Initial draft proposal and bibliographic database
Task 3: Undertake a preliminmy review and synthesis of the resulting publications, and upon completion of the review, consult with the MI team to determine if a further targeted review ofliterature in other related sectors will be necessary. Formulate recommendations for future initiatives to provide substantive guidance on the best approaches for stakeholder engagement.
Results from the search and review will be compiled into a high quality guidance document.
