Description
Background
The City of Seattle is seeking to establish a new contract for the supply of iron castings and related items, including meter boxes, manhole covers, grating covers, valve box extensions, risers, and flanged bends.
The City does not own the molds necessary for creating these castings, and the selected bidder will be responsible for all costs associated with the creation of new molds, which must be approved by the City’s Water Distribution and/or Water Engineers.
The City has previously held a successful contract for Metal Castings since 2013, but this contract is set to expire with all renewal options exhausted. In 2025, city departments collectively spent approximately $1,265,000 on metal castings.
Work Details
The vendor shall supply iron castings and other specified items as follows:
- Meter boxes
- Manhole covers
- Grating covers
- Valve box extensions
- Risers
- Flanged bends
The vendor must have the capability to manufacture iron castings from City of Seattle drawings and have machining capabilities to reduce standard iron castings to specified sizes. All castings must meet the 2023 City of Seattle Standard Plans for Municipal Construction and American Waterworks Association standards. The vendor shall provide ASTM A 48 Class 30 iron castings, with ductile iron ASTM A536 80-55-06 for Type 230 covers. The vendor must also prepare at least two test bars for each lot of castings supplied. The City will have ownership rights to all plans and drawings created for manufacturing customized products.
Period of Performance
The contract will be for five years with an option for one two-year extension at the City's discretion.
Place of Performance
The work will be performed in Seattle, Washington.
Bidder Requirements
Bidders must have ISO 9001 certification or be in the process of obtaining it. They must also obtain a Seattle Business License if they have a physical presence in the city and pay all associated taxes before contract execution.
