VT-208-18478-003 ADA Life Health and Safety Priority 3

Background
Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University is undertaking the Address Life, Health, Safety, Accessibility and Code Compliance (ADA Life Safety) Priority 3 project to enhance pedestrian accessibility on campus. This initiative aligns with the university's vision for a sustainable campus that promotes health and universal design, as outlined in the Beyond Boundaries 2047 Campus Plan.

The North Academic District has been identified as a priority area for these improvements, specifically focusing on the Academic Green Link adjacent to Patton Hall.

Work Details
The project involves the construction of a 0.99-acre accessible pathway corridor that includes grading, drainage, hardscape, electrical work, and planting. Key features include:
- Replacement of existing steep pathways with new pathways and ramps designed per ADA 2010 Standards.
- Pathways will be paved with cast-in-place concrete featuring both broomed and ground-face finishes.
- Hokie stone walls will line the pathways for seating, soil retention, directionality, and to deter informal paths (cowpaths).
- Installation of standard campus light fixtures, trash receptacles, tables and chairs, and bike racks.
- A planting strategy emphasizing native plants to enhance campus ecology while providing seasonal interest.
- Stormwater management will maintain existing drainage patterns without requiring additional facilities due to the project's size (less than 1 acre). Erosion and sediment control measures will comply with Virginia Tech standards.

Period of Performance
The project is scheduled to commence upon approval of the working drawings and is expected to be completed by August 26, 2024.

The contract work will be performed at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University located in Blacksburg, Virginia.
