Background
The Virginia Department of Corrections, specifically the Pocahontas State Correctional Center, is seeking qualified veterinarians to provide veterinary services for Department of Corrections canines (aggressive bite dogs). The mission of the Canine Program is to enhance public safety by utilizing canines for various tasks including narcotics detection and offender control. The contract aims to support public, employee, and offender safety while intercepting illegal substances within correctional facilities.

Work Details
The contractor shall provide comprehensive veterinary services including:

1. 24/7 emergency veterinary care, including examination, diagnosis, treatment, and prescription medication for canines.
2. Basic physical examinations for newly purchased and in-service K-9s, including blood tests and x-rays.
3. Maintenance of complete veterinary records accessible to VADOC handlers.
4. Provision of a drug contact antidote kit containing Narcan and other medications.
5. Standard reporting as requested by VADOC.
6. Annual training for K-9 handlers on basic care and emergency procedures.
7. Documentation of treatments provided with detailed records.
8. Minor surgeries at the contractor's clinic and assistance with major surgeries as needed.
9. Dental work for K-9s either at the contractor's clinic or through referrals to specialists.
10. Basic grooming services.

Period of Performance
The contract will commence on November 1st, 2025.

Place of Performance
Services will be performed at the Pocahontas State Correctional Center located in Pocahontas, Virginia.
