Background
The State University of New York at Stony Brook (SUNY) is seeking to award a contract under its discretionary authority for the procurement of services related to conducting a Nearshore Trawl Survey. The goal of this contract is to gather scientific data through a comprehensive survey of the South Shore of Long Island, NY, which is critical for understanding marine ecosystems.
Work Details
The contractor will provide a research or commercial vessel capable of conducting one Nearshore Trawl Survey in the 2025 calendar year. The survey will consist of 30 stations selected randomly across fifteen depth strata (0-10m, 10-20m, 20-30m) along the South Shore from NY Harbor to Block Island Sound. Each station will involve a CTD cast followed by a 20-minute tow at 3 knots to sample 1 nautical mile of seafloor.
The catch will be sorted by species and weighed using a deck scale, with subsamples of 30 individuals per species taken for length measurements. The vessel must have ample freezer space for biological samples (5 per tow for 8 species) and a live well setup to comply with endangered species permit requirements. Onboard accommodations must include bunk space for at least four science crew members who will conduct the scientific work required for the survey.
The vessel should be capable of towing specific gear provided by SUNY, including:
- 60" Type 11 Thyboron Doors
- 20 fathom ground cables on ¾” 6 x 19 galvanized wire with 2 3/8” cookies
- 20 fathom top legs
- A trawl net measuring 380 x 12cm with specific materials
- Codends rigged with stainless steel components
- Maximum tow wire deployment of up to 150 meters during deep tows
- Integration with Simrad multisensors tied to the net.
