Description

Background
The New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University (NYSCC) is soliciting bids for a Schottky type Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM) with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) capabilities. This equipment will be utilized to characterize microstructures, fracture surfaces, powders, and elemental compositions of materials.

The SEM/EDS will support graduate students in their education and research of glass, ceramic, and metallic materials, with some limited use on certain polymers used in biomaterial work.

Work Details
The contract involves the provision of a Schottky type Scanning Electron Microscope (FE-SEM) with the following mandatory specifications:

1. Electron Source: Schottky field emission gun; Accelerating voltage range (0.1–30 kV); Beam current range (1 pA – 200 nA); Emission current stability (<0.2% per hour).

2. Resolution: High-vacuum resolution ≤0.9 nm at 30 kV, ≤1.6 nm at 1 kV; Low-vacuum or variable pressure modes ≤1.5 nm at 10 Pa, 30 kV; Magnification range ×20 to ≥300,000.

3. Imaging & Detectors: Everhart-Thornley SE detector; Backscattered electron (BSE) detector; IR CCD chamber camera; Signal mixing/detection modes; LV-BSE detector.

4. Stage: Travel range (min X/Y: 50×50 mm, Z: 40 mm); Tilt range (−4° to +70°); Sample size allowed minimum of 50 mm x 50 mm x 30 mm.

5. Vacuum System: Column vacuum level <5×10⁻⁷ Pa; Variable pressure/low-vacuum range of 10–4000 Pa.

6. EDS: Silicon Drift Detector (~30–80 mm² or larger); Energy resolution ≤130–140 eV at Mn Kα (5.9 keV); High count rate capability (>50k cps usable); Light element detection down to B or C; Spot, line scan, and full spectral mapping capabilities.

7. Chiller: Water to air chiller for SEM chiller connection to an already installed water to water chiller.

8. Installation and training services are also required.

Period of Performance
The anticipated contract start date is to be determined following the bid submission deadline on July 8, 2026.

Place of Performance
The contract will be performed at the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University located in Alfred, NY.

Bidder Requirements
Bidders must comply with New York State Finance Law Sections 139j and 139k regarding lobbying restrictions during the procurement process. Additionally, bidders must submit a Vendor Responsibility Questionnaire if they expect to receive more than $100,000 over the life of the contract.
