Railway Tunnel LIghting

Background
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) is the oldest public transportation authority and the 5th busiest commuter rail system in the United States. The MBTA is seeking information regarding lighting fixtures suitable for rail tunnel applications to enhance safety, improve visibility, reduce energy consumption, and comply with relevant industry standards.

This Request for Information (RFI) aims to gather details on available manufacturers, products, specifications, and any additional relevant information to aid in a future Request for Proposal (RFP) for potential upcoming projects.

Work Details
The MBTA intends to upgrade the lighting systems in several or all rail tunnels by replacing current T12 bulb light fixtures with LED light fixtures. Over 10,000 light fixtures may be needed for the expansive tunnel network.

The new fixtures will be mounted on the sidewalls within the tunnels, with new power cables brought to these fixtures. The fixture/system must meet all required federal, state, and local codes. The RFI requests detailed responses regarding product solutions, specifications, additional equipment needed for operation, compliance with state codes, operational modes of fixtures, maintenance requirements, and any suggestions for future RFP pricing.

Period of Performance
The RFI was published on May 12, 2025. A future RFP may be developed in late 2025 following the review of responses to this RFI.

Place of Performance
The contract work will be performed in various rail tunnels managed by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority in Massachusetts.
