Background
The Fleet Modernization Project aims to completely refresh and redesign California’s intercity passenger fleet. Caltrans, responsible for administering and overseeing the intercity passenger rail services for the State of California, seeks to modernize the existing fleet in a sustainable and cost-effective manner. The project is intended to attract riders back in the post-pandemic setting, delivering a more thoughtfully designed product compatible with modern public transportation trends.

Work Details
The project involves completely renovating the vehicle interiors and exteriors over a nine-month timeline. Prototype testing and production will commence after the completion of a mock-up vehicle or scale model. The selected design firm is expected to provide a conceptual design study supported by stakeholder surveys. Ultimately, the designs will be installed on the rest of the railcar fleet over a period of 4 years.

Period of Performance
The estimated timeframe for the project is nine months for initial design installation upon a mock-up vehicle or scale model, followed by prototype testing and production.
The installation of designs on the rest of the railcar fleet is expected to take place over a period of 4 years.
