Jefferson Street Widening from Avenue 38 to Varner Road

The work requested under this contract involves the improvement and widening of Jefferson Street from Avenue 38 to Varner Road. The project includes expanding the roadway to three lanes in each direction between Varner Road and Avenue 40, with a refined traffic study to evaluate a northbound right turn lane onto Sun City Boulevard to maintain the current traffic pattern. Between Avenue 40 and Avenue 38, the road will be widened to two lanes in each direction, with one northbound lane dropping near Avenue 38 to match the receiving lanes at the entrance of Talavera. Additional improvements include the construction of continuous sidewalks on the east side of Jefferson Street north of Sun City Boulevard, and the installation of a Class I Bike Path fully separated from vehicular traffic on the west side of Jefferson Street north of Sun City Boulevard, with appropriate crossings at existing intersections. South of Sun City Boulevard, the Class I facility will switch to the east side of Jefferson Street and terminate at Varner Road as appropriate. The selected consultant will also be responsible for coordinating with the Desert Sand Unified School District regarding impacts around Shadow Hills High School, as well as coordinating with private property owners and other stakeholders as identified during the development process. The City of Indio, in cooperation with the Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG), is requesting these services. KOA/Lochner was previously contracted to develop conceptual plans up to 35% design, including a traffic study and community outreach to determine the desired level of active transportation improvements and to discuss impacts with private property owners. The contract requirements include further refinement of the traffic study, detailed design of the roadway and active transportation facilities, and ongoing stakeholder coordination.
