Vigor Marine LLC of Portland, Oregon, has received a $222.5 million firm-fixed-price Navy contract to maintain, modernize and repair USS Gridley (DDG 101) during its fiscal 2027 Depot Modernization Period. The contract has a potential value of up to $232.5 million. Vigor will provide the labor, facilities, equipment, production, testing and quality assurance needed to complete the ship’s scheduled availability. Work will take place in Seattle and is expected to be completed by December 2028.

USS Gridley Depot Modernization Period Details

Vigor will coordinate shipboard repairs and alterations across multiple trades during an availability the Navy planned to begin in March 2027. The solicitation calls for a contractor with a pier capable of accommodating the destroyer and the workforce to integrate maintenance and modernization work. Vigor will carry out the work against the Navy’s specifications, drawings and test procedures.

The solicitation work document identifies a berthing-habitability installation and ship alterations involving AN/SLQ-32 equipment and the AN/SPS-73(V)18 surface-scan radar. It also includes repairs and alterations prepared for the ship’s type commander. Vigor’s work encompasses production, testing and quality assurance for the availability, rather than installation work alone.

An earlier Navy outline of anticipated work shows the scale of the planned effort: roughly 139,000 shipyard maintenance labor-days and 68,000 modernization labor-days. It described potential work on hull preservation, air intakes and exhaust uptakes, propulsion and electrical equipment, sonar components and auxiliary systems. The modernization planning covered electronic warfare, combat and sonar systems, ventilation and berthing. That outline was a planning document; the solicitation’s work specifications govern the contracted tasks.

DDG-51 Modernization Background

Navy budget materials place depot availabilities within a broader effort to maintain and upgrade in-service Arleigh Burke-class destroyers. They describe DDG Modernization 2.0 as a package of radar, combat-system, electronic-warfare and ship-system improvements, though the program-wide list should not be read as Gridley’s installation list. The same budget materials had deferred Gridley’s planned availability from fiscal 2026 to a future year; the subsequent solicitation scheduled its depot period to begin in fiscal 2027.

Award and Contractor Background

The Navy said it made the award to maintain required industrial mobilization capability. Its solicitation sought one contractor across the West Coast, reflecting the facilities and workforce needed for a lengthy, integrated ship availability.

Vigor has received other Navy destroyer depot-modernization awards. A contract awarded in October 2024 for USS Kidd (DDG 100) has a potential value of $281.8 million and includes maintenance, repair and modernization. Vigor also holds a fiscal 2026 depot-modernization contract for USS Sampson (DDG 102), with a potential value of $262 million. Both involve scheduled repair and modernization of destroyers, the same type of ship availability covered by the Gridley award.

This award was disclosed by the DoW in its daily press release. Additional contract details will be available on HigherGov in approximately 90 days under N0002427C4414 after the contract is formally disclosed by the government.
