Promethean Wins $12 Million Calcasieu Ship Channel Earthwork Contract

Promethean General Contractors LLC of Jefferson, Louisiana, has received an $11.7 million firm-fixed-price contract from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ New Orleans District for earthwork along the Calcasieu Ship Channel. The company will clear and grub land, excavate, and place borrow material in the Lake Charles, Louisiana, area. The Corps estimates the work will be completed by May 13, 2027.

Calcasieu Ship Channel Earthwork Details

Promethean will prepare areas along the channel by clearing vegetation and grubbing roots before excavation. Its contract also calls for placement of borrow material—soil brought in for the earthwork. The award notice describes these activities as work along the channel, rather than dredging within it.

The work is taking place on a waterway that requires recurring maintenance. The Corps describes the Calcasieu River and Pass project as a 68-mile deep-draft route connecting Lake Charles to the Gulf and says different channel reaches are dredged on different schedules. Its dredged-material management plan also addresses the long-term need for places to hold material removed from the waterway.

Award and Contractor Background

The Corps received six bids for the earthwork contract. Promethean has performed other work for the New Orleans District, including a Calcasieu River Saltwater Barrier shops building contract with a potential value of $3.4 million and a scheduled performance end in May 2025. That building project is part of the contractor’s regional Corps work, but has a different scope from the new channel earthwork award.
