Lockheed Martin’s Rotary and Mission Systems unit has received a Navy contract worth up to $122.4 million to support the Trident II strategic weapon system’s shipboard navigation subsystem. The award covers Trident fleet support, Shipboard Integration Increment 8 and navigation development for U.S. and United Kingdom submarine programs, including work benefiting a UK foreign military sale. The Navy’s Strategic Systems Programs expects work to be completed by Oct. 31, 2030. Most of the work will take place in Mitchel Field, New York, with additional work in Huntington Beach, California, and Manassas, Virginia.
Trident Shipboard Navigation Support Details
Lockheed Martin will design, produce, integrate, install and test navigation hardware and software while supporting the operational Trident II fleet. The statement of work calls for repairs, spares, logistics, training and engineering support for U.S. Ohio-class and UK Vanguard-class submarines. It also covers navigation equipment and shipbuilding support for the Columbia- and Dreadnought-class submarines under construction.
For Columbia, Lockheed Martin will deliver navigation equipment, system-stock spares and refresh kits, manage hardware obsolescence and identify replacement parts. Dreadnought deliveries include alteration kits, equipment and refresh materials. The work also includes repairing Ohio- and Vanguard-class navigation hardware and returning it to system stock. The statement of work measures a portion of those repairs at 113 equivalent units for U.S. equipment and 29 for UK equipment.
Lockheed Martin will manage installation and onboard implementation of the Navigation TR-E3 alteration for Increment 8. The planned proofing work includes an at-sea system-level test with an inertial-navigation performance run, followed by a final installation report and an updated installation manual. Separately, the company will deliver hardware for the Trident II life-extension effort and update navigation-interface simulator software as needed to support D5LE2 emulator requirements or hardware changes. The Navy’s contract notice describes the effort as primarily equipment procurement with associated technical engineering services.
Trident Shipboard Modernization Background
The Navy’s FY2027 budget documentation describes Increment 8 as a refresh of aging shipboard navigation equipment. Its planned changes include replacing the roughly 30-year-old Electrostatic Gyro Navigator, refreshing inertial-navigation components and electronic consoles, and updating software for the replacement navigator. The budget says the associated ship alterations retain existing navigation-center bedplates, cabling, cooling and ventilation, and electrical power infrastructure.
The same budget document places the increment within a longer modernization effort. It says successive Shipboard Integration increments have addressed obsolescence through targeted upgrades, while a planned Shipboard Systems Modernization Portfolio is intended to redesign the broader shipboard architecture for greater adaptability. Lockheed Martin’s award includes navigation work identified with both Increment 8 and that modernization portfolio in the statement of work.
Award and Contractor Background
The Navy awarded the contract on a sole-source basis. In its market-research notice, Strategic Systems Programs identified Lockheed Martin as the incumbent for the requirement and its designated Trident navigation-subsystem integrator, citing the company’s system design knowledge and operational experience.
The notice also links this requirement to earlier sole-source navigation work awarded to Lockheed Martin. A 2023 navigation award valued at up to $377.7 million covered Trident fleet support, Increment 8 and navigation development, with a potential performance end in September 2026. The Defense Department subsequently announced a $1.169 billion award in September 2024 for Trident fleet support, Increment 8 and navigation development that also benefited the UK.
This award was disclosed by the DoW in its daily press release. Additional contract details will be available on HigherGov in approximately 90 days under N0003027C3015 after the contract is formally disclosed by the government.
