Integer Technologies of Columbia, South Carolina, has won an Office of Naval Research contract worth up to $23.1 million for Threat Resilient Integrated Defense for Enhanced Naval Technologies, or TRIDENT. The research will examine how to apply threat-informed zero-trust security to shipboard power systems so naval platforms can assess their cyber-physical condition, adjust their defenses during an attack and continue operating without sacrificing system performance. Integer is forming a team with Florida State University and its Center for Advanced Power Systems. Work will be performed in Columbia and is expected to conclude in October 2030.
TRIDENT Details
Integer and its university partners will investigate zero-trust architecture frameworks tailored to the controls and physical equipment that make up naval power systems. The work centers on giving a platform awareness of its cyber-physical state and the ability to change its security posture as threats develop. The intended result is a power system that can withstand adversarial interference while continuing to support ship operations.
The research must account for constraints that distinguish shipboard power from conventional information networks. Integrated power systems require low-latency responses, while ships may combine legacy equipment with newer components. TRIDENT will examine how to apply security controls across that mix without disrupting the power system’s performance. ONR’s applied cyber resiliency research identifies similarly long-lived, heterogeneous cyber-physical systems as a naval security challenge.
Award and Contractor Background
ONR selected the research through its competitive long-range Navy and Marine Corps science-and-technology announcement, which covers research across multiple disciplines rather than a single production requirement. ONR receives proposals under the announcement throughout the year, so the number submitted for this award is unknown. The award is a cost-plus-fixed-fee contract.
The award builds on relevant, though distinct, experience among the team members. Under a separate ONR contract worth up to $16.6 million, Integer is researching cyber vulnerabilities in maritime autonomous systems through a digital environment that models their cyber-physical systems and operations; that effort has a potential performance end in April 2028. Florida State University announced a $31 million Navy contract in August 2021 for its Center for Advanced Power Systems to research shipboard electrical power and energy systems, including real-time simulation-based testing.
This award was disclosed by the DoW in its daily press release. Additional contract details will be available on HigherGov in approximately 90 days under N0001427C1303 after the contract is formally disclosed by the government.
