USS Harry S. Truman Elevator Support Details
HII Mission Technologies will assist the ship’s crew with the operation, maintenance, repair and testing of aircraft elevators and weapons elevators during the overhaul. Its support also covers deck-edge doors, hangar-bay divisional doors, vertical package conveyors and related handling systems.
The work is part of the Navy’s Elevator Support Unit contract, which provides engineers and technicians for shipboard elevator and cargo-handling equipment on aircraft carriers and amphibious ships. Across that contract, the unit’s work includes inspections and analyses to guide maintenance planning, as well as technical support for overhaul and modernization. On Truman, HII will also train operators and provide repair support to the ship’s crew as overhaul work proceeds.
USS Harry S. Truman Overhaul Background
Truman is the eighth Nimitz-class carrier to undergo a refueling and complex overhaul at Newport News Shipbuilding. The multiyear effort refuels the carrier’s reactors and repairs and modernizes ship systems. The Navy awarded HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding a $5.1 billion main overhaul contract in September 2026 and schedules the carrier’s redelivery for November 2031. The elevator-support order covers work during the early portion of that broader overhaul.
Award and Contractor Background
The Navy issued the cost-plus-fixed-fee order under an Elevator Support Unit contract whose ordering period began in June 2026. The Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Conversion and Repair in Newport News is the contracting activity.
HII Mission Technologies also held an $11.5 million Truman elevator-support order for overhaul advanced planning, with a performance end date in October 2026. For the USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) overhaul, the company received a separate $20.5 million Elevator Support Unit order with a performance end date in May 2026. Those awards show the company’s recent work on carrier elevator systems before this Truman execution order.
