HII Fleet Support Group Wins $10 Million Navy Order for USS John C. Stennis Overhaul Support

HII Fleet Support Group LLC of Newport News, Virginia, has received a $10.4 million U.S. Navy delivery order to support the refueling and complex overhaul of USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74). The company will provide carrier engineering maintenance assist team support for preparing, evaluating and carrying out repairs, including technical guidance and hands-on instruction in fault identification and repair techniques. Work will take place in Newport News and is expected to be completed in September 2027.

USS John C. Stennis Overhaul Support Details

HII Fleet Support Group will assist personnel executing repairs during the carrier’s overhaul. Its work includes evaluating repair needs, guiding maintenance execution and helping apply current repair techniques. Where called for under the order, the company will provide hands-on instruction so personnel can identify faults and perform repairs.

The order was placed under a broader Navy engineering and maintenance support contract covering shipboard elevators and cargo-handling equipment on aircraft carriers and amphibious ships. That contract encompasses engineering services, inspections, maintenance, testing, repair and operator training. The Stennis order describes overhaul and maintenance-assist support but does not assign every type of work covered by the broader contract to this delivery order.

USS John C. Stennis Overhaul Background

Stennis entered its refueling and complex overhaul in May 2021 under an approximately $3 billion contract with HII’s Newport News Shipbuilding division. The midlife overhaul refuels the carrier’s reactors and repairs or upgrades ship systems for the second half of its service life, according to the Navy’s account of the ship’s arrival at Newport News.

The carrier left dry dock in April 2024 and moved into the outfitting phase. The Navy said then that the overhaul was more than 65% complete, while additional work identified through ship-condition assessments and industrial-base challenges had extended its schedule. The Navy’s fiscal 2026 shipbuilding budget request subsequently sought $483.1 million in cost-to-complete funding associated with cost growth and an additional 13-month delivery delay. The September 2027 date for HII Fleet Support Group’s order is its support-work completion date, not a stated date for redelivery of the ship.

Award and Contractor Background

The new order adds to HII Fleet Support Group’s work on Stennis. A carrier engineering maintenance assist team order for preparation, evaluation and execution of repairs had a potential value of $17.4 million and a performance end date in August 2026. A separate elevator support unit order for the carrier’s overhaul had a potential value of $14.6 million and also ran through August 2026. Those awards document related support on the same ship; the new order is issued under a different, previously awarded contract.
