General Electric Co. of Lynn, Massachusetts, has received a sole-source, firm-fixed-price delivery order worth up to $47.8 million from Defense Logistics Agency Weapons Support to supply J85 engine compressor rotors for the Air Force. The one-time component purchase is being made under an existing aircraft-engine parts agreement and is scheduled to run through Sept. 30, 2029. The J85 powers the Air Force’s T-38 trainer, which remains in service as the Air Force prepares to replace it with the T-7A.
J85 Compressor Rotor Order Details
General Electric will supply compressor rotors for Air Force J85 engines. The order covers engine components rather than complete engines or aircraft-level maintenance. DLA Weapons Support in Oklahoma City is managing the purchase.
The order falls under a General Electric aircraft-engine parts agreement that covers the manufacture and supply of components including compressor rotors, bearings, blades and seals. That agreement supports several engine types and aircraft; this delivery order is specifically for J85 compressor rotors.
T-38 Training Fleet Background
The J85-powered T-38 remains an Air Force jet trainer while the service works toward introducing the T-7A. Air Force reporting on T-38 depot work says maintenance programs for the aircraft’s A, B and C models are intended to keep enough trainers available to meet pilot-training demand until replacement aircraft arrive. The rotor order supplies one category of engine hardware used in that broader sustainment environment.
The Air Force also awarded a $100 million T-38 repair, inspection and maintenance contract in March 2025 to add capacity for structural work and extend aircraft service life. That effort concerns aircraft repairs rather than J85 engine parts, but illustrates the continued investment in keeping the training fleet operational.
Award and Contractor Background
DLA made the rotor purchase as a sole-source acquisition. Under the same aircraft-engine parts agreement, General Electric previously received an $81.2 million order for J85 compressor rotors and an $18.4 million order for J85 aircraft compressor rotors. Those orders show the agreement’s use for similar Air Force engine-component purchases; the award notice does not identify either as the predecessor to the new order.
