DroneShield Wins Up to $500 Million Army Counter-Drone Contract

DroneShield LLC of Warrenton, Virginia, has received a firm-fixed-price Army contract worth up to $500 million to provide commercial counter-unmanned aircraft system capabilities, including systems designed to counter small drones. Army Contracting Command–Detroit Arsenal awarded the contract Sept. 28 after receiving 50 bids. The Army will determine work locations through individual orders, and the contract has an estimated completion date of Sept. 27, 2029.

Counter-Drone Contract Details

DroneShield will supply counter-drone capabilities as the Army places orders under the indefinite-delivery contract. The award notice does not identify particular products or an initial delivery quantity; the orders will establish the specific work and locations. The Army’s announcement of the counter-UAS awards says the contracts can support Domestic Shield, the Joint Interagency Task Force 401 marketplace for counter-drone technology, and other requirements.

The Army is using the awards to make commercial capabilities available for validated needs rather than buying a single standardized system from one vendor. Its announced pool of technologies spans detection, tracking and drone defeat, but the Army has not assigned a particular technology or installation to DroneShield under this contract.

Domestic Shield Background

Domestic Shield is an effort to improve counter-drone protection at risk-prioritized U.S. military facilities and other assets. The Sept. 29 Army announcement lists 10 counter-UAS awardees, with individual contract values ranging from $150 million to $500 million. Those values represent contracting capacity, not orders already placed.

The task force has emphasized matching defenses to individual sites. In an August media roundtable, its director said the marketplace was intended to connect suppliers with demand while allowing installations to receive equipment suited to their circumstances. DroneShield’s contract gives the Army another source for that approach as requirements are defined.

Award and Contractor Background

DroneShield’s award follows an internet solicitation that drew 50 bids. The company also has related Army work to equip four fixed-site zones and six mobile Infantry Squad Vehicles with a counter-small-drone solution under a contract valued at up to $19.6 million, with potential performance through June 2031. Another Army contract for 24 immediate-response kits is valued at up to $2.4 million, with potential performance through October 2026. Those awards describe specific quantities and uses, while the new contract allows the Army to define its purchases through subsequent orders.
