Collins Aerospace Wins $11 Million DLA Contract for C-5 Heat Sink Exchanges

Goodrich Corp., doing business as Collins Aerospace, has received a Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) contract worth up to $10.5 million to provide performance-based support for C-5 aircraft heat sinks used by the Air Force. The firm-fixed-price requirements contract covers C-5 carbon heat-sink exchanges, with an initial ordering period ending Sept. 30, 2028. DLA Weapons Support in Ogden, Utah, made the sole-source award, according to the award notice.

C-5 Carbon Heat Sink Exchange Details

Collins will support the Air Force’s requirement for C-5 carbon heat sinks through an exchange arrangement. The procurement listing identifies the work as performance-based support, while the award establishes a requirements contract under which DLA can place orders for the components.

Heat management is a critical function of aircraft wheel and brake components. An earlier DLA justification for UTC Aerospace Systems wheels-and-brakes support says the components are designed to release heat in a controlled way to protect surrounding parts, including seals and O-rings. That document describes the technical importance of the parts but does not set out delivery quantities or milestones for this heat-sink award.

C-5M Fleet Background

The contract supports a specialized component in a fleet of 52 C-5M aircraft managed by the Air Force’s Airlift Directorate. Fleet sustainment remains a focus alongside upgrades to mission computers, weather radar, communications and cockpit systems. In its account of the C-5 “Drive to 55” readiness effort, the Air Force described how parts needed only every four or eight years can complicate supply planning and maintenance coordination.

Award and Contractor Background

DLA made the award without a competition. The earlier wheels-and-brakes justification identified UTC Aerospace Systems as the original equipment manufacturer with control of the designs and specialized manufacturing processes for components across several Air Force aircraft, including the C-5. It also described C-5 and C-130 wheels, brakes and consumables as part of a planned later phase of that broader support effort. The document provides context for DLA’s use of a specialized supplier, but it does not identify an earlier C-5 heat-sink contract.
