Boeing Wins $26 Million Army Contract for CH-47 Chinook Cargo Hook Maintenance

Boeing has won a $26.1 million U.S. Army contract to maintain and overhaul cargo hooks for CH-47 Chinook helicopters. The firm-fixed-price, indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity award allows the Army to order work through an estimated completion date of Sept. 28, 2031. Army Contracting Command at Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, issued the award to Boeing’s Ridley Park, Pennsylvania, operation.

CH-47 Cargo Hook Maintenance Details

Boeing will maintain and overhaul the cargo hooks used to carry loads beneath CH-47 helicopters. The Army will determine work locations as it places individual orders. Cargo hooks are central to the Chinook’s external-load role: an Army sling-load reference rates the center hook on CH-47D and CH-47F aircraft at 26,000 pounds, though allowable loads depend on the aircraft and operating conditions.

The importance of the hook system was illustrated by a 2022 incident in which a CH-47F unintentionally released a 10,000-pound training load because of a mechanical problem involving its emergency-jettison cable. An Army safety account said investigators found similar cable issues on other aircraft and that a precautionary maintenance message went out across the fleet. The account does not identify that incident as the reason for this award.

CH-47 Program Background

The maintenance award comes as the Army transitions CH-47F production from Block I to Block II. The Army reported delivery of the final Block I aircraft in April 2026 and has adopted a rapid-fielding approach for Block II, which it describes as a recapitalization intended to improve lift, range and sustainment. The award notice identifies the cargo-hook work as CH-47 maintenance and overhaul; it does not tie the orders to Block II production.

The Army solicited one bid and received one bid for the contract. The award notice identifies Boeing as the recipient and provides an estimated completion date, while leaving the locations and funding for individual jobs to be determined when orders are issued.
