BAE Systems has received a $99.2 million Navy contract to provide systems engineering and integration support to Portfolio Acquisition Executive Strategic Systems Programs. The work covers U.S. and U.K. Trident II D5 strategic weapon systems and related submarine, security and fleet-support programs. The award also benefits a Foreign Military Sale. Work is scheduled for completion by Sept. 30, 2027, primarily in Rockville, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., with additional work across U.S. fleet and engineering sites and in the United Kingdom.
Systems Engineering and Integration Support Services Details
BAE will sustain and integrate the Trident Strategic Weapons System and related Attack Weapon System, nuclear weapon surety and security systems. Under the statement of work, the company will maintain technical objectives and guidance, assess how proposed weapon-system and ship alterations affect interfaces and cabling, and produce engineering analyses and U.S.–U.K. interface drawings. Its work also extends to the Columbia-class common missile compartment and the U.K.’s Vanguard and Dreadnought submarines.
For submarines in service, BAE will provide test engineering during refits, maintain test procedures and field-site equipment, and analyze weapon-system test data. The statement of work calls for maintenance of the Trident Data Evaluation Support System and modernization of data-analysis software for Columbia construction and other test events. U.K. support includes field engineering at Barrow-in-Furness during Dreadnought construction and system-level testing and reports for the first two Dreadnought hulls.
The company will also prepare fleet training and technical documentation, conduct safety reviews and hazard analyses, and support cybersecurity and configuration management. The Navy’s market-research notice described a requirement for approximately 407 full-time-equivalent personnel annually across sites including the Washington area, Cape Canaveral, Silverdale, Huntsville and Kings Bay. The subsequent presolicitation notice also identified support for Trident D5 Life Extension 2, the nuclear-armed sea-launched cruise missile program and facilities sustainment.
Trident Modernization Background
The engineering work spans Trident systems in service and systems being developed for future submarines. According to Strategic Systems Programs, the current life-extended D5 system will initially equip Columbia-class submarines, while D5 Life Extension 2 is intended to address longer-term aging and obsolescence. The Navy says the latter effort entered engineering and manufacturing development in 2025, with initial fleet introduction planned for fiscal 2039. BAE’s assigned work on system interfaces, testing, technical data and the Columbia missile compartment falls within that broader transition.
Award and Contractor Background
The Navy made the award on a sole-source basis. Its presolicitation notice said BAE had the personnel and specialized Trident systems knowledge needed for the interrelated U.S. and U.K. requirements. An earlier BAE engineering and integration support contract covers closely related Trident systems, test engineering, fleet support and Columbia missile-compartment work; it has a potential value of $593.8 million and a performance end date of Sept. 30, 2026. BAE also holds a $125.7 million potential-value award for engineering support focused on Trident D5 Life Extension 2, scheduled to run through Sept. 30, 2027.
This award was disclosed by the DoW in its daily press release. Additional contract details will be available on HigherGov in approximately 90 days under N0003026C3033 after the contract is formally disclosed by the government.
