Amentum Wins $572 Million Cheyenne Mountain Warning System Sustainment Contract

Amentum Technology has won a $572.4 million contract to operate, maintain and sustain the North American Aerospace Defense Command Cheyenne Mountain Complex Integrated Tactical Warning/Attack Assessment system, legacy space command-and-control capabilities, and related support systems and tools. The Space Systems Command award covers work at Peterson Space Force Base, Colorado, through Sept. 27, 2033.

Cheyenne Mountain Warning and Space Support Details

Amentum will provide continuing operations and sustainment for the warning and attack-assessment systems, rather than maintenance of the Cheyenne Mountain facility itself. The systems support the processing and presentation of information used to assess air, missile and space threats. An Air Force account of the mission describes its purpose as giving warning authorities accurate, timely assessments.

The contract also covers legacy space command and control and the associated systems and tools that support the warning mission. Amentum’s work encompasses their operation, maintenance and sustainment alongside the tactical warning and attack-assessment capability.

Warning System Sustainment Background

The Air Force said the Cheyenne Mountain system moved from development into sustainment in 2008. It subsequently shifted from a contractor-led total-system-performance model toward a competitively awarded sustainment approach. That history places the new award within a long-running effort to keep established warning and command-and-control systems operating.

Award and Contractor Background

The award followed a competitive acquisition that drew seven offers. A 2015 Government Accountability Office decision identifies Raytheon Technical Services as the winner of the first contract in this support series. That contract had a $700 million ceiling and covered operations, support, sustainment and technology refresh.
