Description
The USCG is the lead federal agency charged with fulfilling US domestic and international maritime Search and Rescue (SAR) responsibilities and obligations to respond to distressed persons in domestic navigable waters and at sea. The SAR Program within the Domain Awareness Portfolio provides the tools needed by USCG Rescue Coordination Centers (RCCs) to plan and coordinate responses to distress incidents in accordance with US domestic SAR Policy under the National SAR Plan and US obligations under various treaties and conventions, signed by the US, that define the international SAR system. The SAR Program consists of three systems: Automated Mutual-Assistance Vessel Rescue System (AMVER), Search and Rescue Optimal Planning System (SAROPS), and Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking System (SARSAT).
