The National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) investment was initiated in BY1977. In 2004, NWI began digitizing all of it's wetlands information. The NWI investment is maintained by the Branch of Geospatial Mapping and Technical Services within the USFWS Ecological Services Program in headquarters facility. NWI provides National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) data management and distribution (required by Emergency Wetland Resource Act, OMB Circular A-16 and the Geospatial Data Act of 2018) to Federal, State, Regional, local, and Tribal agencies and the public. The NWI data provides information on the extent, characteristics and functions of wetlands, riparian, and deep-water habitats and is intended to promote the understanding and conservation of wetland resources through discovery and education as well as to aid in resource management, research and decision making.
