Lab GSS supports following Legislative Mandates: Federal Meat Inspection Act, Poultry Products Inspection Act, Egg Products Inspection Act, the USDA Agricultural Act of 2014, and the Humane Methods of Livestock Slaughter Act. Lab GSS evaluates and implements scientific methods and available technology to meet FSIS laboratory analytical needs for: Detecting food safety hazards; Refining and developing tools to measure how industry practices affect the safety of meat, poultry, Siluriformes, and egg products To better analyze the impact of industry practices on public health. The benefit of the Lab-GSS is that it increases consumer safety through its capability to analyze samples to protect public health. The systems and tools under the Lab-GSS investment provide laboratory analysts with electronic interfaces for entering, reviewing, and authorizing laboratory sample testing results and sharing those results with field and HQ employees for near-real time decision-making. The LabWare ELP provides a real-time, 21 CFR 11-compliant electronic record systems for FSIS laboratory users to transact data that support laboratory business processes and laboratory accreditation under ISO 17025. The systems within this investment interface with other agency data systems to report the status of samples received at the laboratories and the authorized testing results. This investment helps support multiple performance measures within the Agency's Annual Performance Plan by improving the understanding of known hazards and risks associated with FSIS-regulated commodities, from farm-to-table, to inform the development of agency policies to reduce, eliminate, or prevent consumer exposure to known foodborne hazards associated with meat, poultry, and processed egg products. Through this investment, FSIS will examine existing science and available technology to meet its analytical needs for addressing emerging food safety hazards, including refining and developing new laboratorymethods toimprove the safety of meat, poultry, egg, and Siluriformes products.
