While a formal ROI analysis has not been performed, the investment brings coordination to several tasks
that are currently distributed across the Department which brings duplication and inefficiency. The
Data Strategy Team was created to improve the Department's capacity to prepare for and manage
public data releases. In years prior to the Data Strategy Team's creation there had been several high-
visibility incidents regarding error or miscommunication with a Department data release. This created a
need for resources to be spent performing a corrective release and resulted in damage to the
Department's image and reputation.
The Data Inventory addresses a recent OMB requirement that is part of the Administration's Open Data
initiatives. It has been managed as a pilot project to date and can have a formal ROI performed as part
of the work to institutionalize the Inventory as viable IT functionality that benefits the entire
Department.
