Description
The IZ Gateway is a data exchange hub that facilitates the connection of immunization information systems (IISs) with each other, multiple IISs with providers, and multiple IISs with consumer applications. The IZ Gateway enables the submission of and access of emergency vaccine response (e.g., COVID-19 and monkeypox) data and non-emergency vaccine data. In the future, the IZ Gateway will enable the submission of vaccine data to the CDC as data sharing agreements, which will allow vaccine data to be used to inform public health decisions and interventions.

The IZ Gateway is a data exchange hub that facilitates connection of IISs with each other, multiple IISs with providers, and multiple IISs with consumer applications. The IZ Gateway will in the future enable the submission of vaccine data to the CDC through data sharing agreements that will inform public health decisions and interventions. With the COVID-19 response and need for CDC to obtain real-time or near real-time data on vaccine use and distribution, ownership of the IZ Gateway was transferred to CDC in August 2020 for the purpose of expanding the solution to enable IIS to IIS share, submission of vaccination data to CDC as data sharing agreements allow, and to enable data exchange between IIS and multi-jurisdictional providers.
Current cost expenditures are concurrent with expectations within the cumulative lifecycle cost of the system as IZ Gateway transitioned from proof of concept under HHS ONC to production mode under CDC. As multi-jurisdictional providers, IISs, and national partners increase and their traffic volume increases, a greater burden of lifecycle cost shifts to O&M to support onboarding, routine maintenance, customer support, and issue resolution while a smaller percentage focuses on enhancement projects to keep the system relevant, effective, and timely.
