Overview

Program Title
CDC Natl Ctr For Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases National Molecular Subtyping Network for Foodborne Disease Surveillance
Description
PulseNet consists of a national network of public health laboratories that perform DNA fingerprinting on food-borne bacteria. The network permits rapid comparisons of these fingerprint patterns through an electronic database at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The DNA fingerprinting methods are called pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS). PulseNet participants use a standardized protocol. They have the capability to exchange information electronically, allowing laboratories and epidemiologists in different states to rapidly compare DNA fingerprints of submitted strains with those in the PulseNet Database. This ability to quickly compare strains leads to enhanced outbreak detection and public health response time in the prevention of further food borne illness. (ESC 172)
