Overview

Program Title
BIA - Federal Acknowledgement Information Resource (FAIR)
Description
The Federal acknowledgement regulations, found in 25 CFR Part 83, govern DOI s process for determining which petitioning groups are Indian tribes within the meaning of Federal law. The Federal Acknowledgement Information Resource (FAIR) system promotes transparency and efficiency in acknowledgement decisions. FAIR provides on-screen access to all the documents in the administrative record of a case. The FAIR system scans all submitted documentation and then the data are extracted, linked, and indexed to create a searchable and annotatable administrative record. Beneficiaries of FAIR include: acknowledgment researchers; solicitors; administrative law judges; decision-makers; petitioners; interested parties; FOIA requestors; and, when litigated, the courts. The administrative record in acknowledgment cases can be voluminous, ranging from 2,000 to 25,000 documents (15,000 to 125,000 pages), and efficient document management is imperative. Managed by the Office of Federal Acknowledgement.
