ARadDS - Analytical Radiation Data System

Investment ID: 020-000011060

Overview

Program Title
ARadDS - Analytical Radiation Data System
Description
ARadDS is the IT architecture that supports radiation monitoring data collected and analyzed from RadNet, fixed and mobile laboratories and the Radon Program. ARadDS is designated as a HVA and CIKR system. The system operates continuously and is hosted at the National Analytical Radiation Environmental Laboratory and maintains radiation data for the nation's air, precipitation, drinking water, and soil. This system fulfills EPA national radiation monitoring responsibilities. Stakeholders include the public, tribal and other government organizations along with international organizations. The IT scope includes all architecture, end points, communications, analytics with embedded computer and software, and hosted software. The investment also covers all security IT components including physical security/access, CDM, and facility computer systems hosted on the architecture. The system scope also includes hosting, contracts (or portion of), and personnel costs related to IT management.

Investment Detail

The Analytical Radiation Data System (ARadDS) supports monitoring of the nation's air, precipitation, soil, and drinking water to track radiation in the environment. Over time, ARadDS sample testing and monitoring results show the fluctuations in normal background levels of environmental radiation. Those results are used for mitigation and restoration should there be an intentional or unintentional radiation incident of national significance.

For CY 2022 and beyond a series of analyses are planned and / or completed to ensure that the system has the capability and assets needed to provide data and performance to support the needs of the agency to provide radiological analyses for decision making and meets the needs of other interested parties, both domestic and international while providing the best value for the government as the only source for environmental radiological monitoring and analysis capability. The program's focus is to ensure the infrastructure and technology support the multiple tasks required.
Completed, ongoing and planned analyses include:
1. Analysis to replace the deployable monitoring capability (Analysis completed, testing begins in FY23)
2. Analysis to determine the feasibility and availability for modernization of radiation analytical systems. Define priorities and possible expanded capabilities to modernization of hardware and software. (Analysis completed, TMF IPP submitted Q4/FY22).
3. Analysis to replace locally developed Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) with vendor supported COTS LIMS. (Analysis due FY23)
