Grant Description
Application Purpose:
This application requests $30,855,528 in FY2022 Section 5309 Capital Investment Grants Small Starts funds for the Austin Expo Center Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project (Project).
Activities Performed:
Project activities include the construction of 43 bus pads and 22 stations along the 12-mile project length, purchase of 16 battery-electric vehicles, and the installation of an end-of-line vehicle charging station. Key BRT elements of the project also include transit signal priority, branding of vehicles and stations, off-vehicle fare collection, near-level boarding, improved pedestrian access, and improved safety, security, and passenger amenities.
Expected Outcomes:
Funding will permit CapMetro to design and construct the necessary infrastructure needed for revenue service of the Expo Center BRT. Funding will help realize the Austin Strategic Mobility Plan's goal that 16 percent of Austinites would use transit to get to work by 2040, address existing and projected future growth and travel demand, and improve mobility choices for people in East Austin to travel to major activity centers, providing a one-seat ride.
Intended Beneficiaries:
The Expo Center BRT project would connect to at least 45 CapMetro fixed-route services (bus and commuter rail). Enhanced transit service will provide a one-seat ride for people in East Austin to travel to major activity centers, including the Travis County Exposition Center (Expo Center), Colony Park, Mueller Master-Planned Community, Wilhelmina Delco Center, The University of Texas at Austin, St. David's Medical Center, and Dell Seton Medical Center downtown employment center. It also provides a direct connection to downtown station and the Red Line (existing commuter rail).
