Overview

Grant Description
Administrative Supplements for Curriculum or Training Modules to Enhance Undergraduate Biomedical Research Training: Pre-CURE Modules in Biology - Summary

The overall goal of the Undergraduate Research Initiative for Student Enhancement (U-RISE) program at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is to increase the number of competitively-prepared, historically-underrepresented undergraduates in basic biomedical and behavioral research careers. This includes racial minorities, disabled individuals, and Pell-eligible students.

The goals of the proposed program are to develop a cadre of well-prepared students who will complete their undergraduate degree programs, successfully compete for positions in graduate programs, and ultimately complete the Ph.D. or MD/Ph.D. and transition to careers in basic biomedical science research.

Our aim for the U-RISE supplement is to introduce research awareness and preparedness to students taking biology core courses through a series of online training modules. These modules will align the concepts learned in these courses with ongoing research opportunities offered on campus.

These Portals to Cures and Research Training Modules are iterative, curriculum-embedded online course modules to be integrated into the core biology classes taken by the potential U-RISE students.
Funding Goals
THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF GENERAL MEDICAL SCIENCES (NIGMS) SUPPORTS BASIC RESEARCH THAT INCREASES OUR UNDERSTANDING OF BIOLOGICAL PROCESSES AND LAYS THE FOUNDATION FOR ADVANCES IN DISEASE DIAGNOSIS, TREATMENT, AND PREVENTION. NIGMS ALSO SUPPORTS RESEARCH IN SPECIFIC CLINICAL AREAS THAT AFFECT MULTIPLE ORGAN SYSTEMS: ANESTHESIOLOGY AND PERI-OPERATIVE PAIN, CLINICAL PHARMACOLOGY ?COMMON TO MULTIPLE DRUGS AND TREATMENTS, AND INJURY, CRITICAL ILLNESS, SEPSIS, AND WOUND HEALING.? NIGMS-FUNDED SCIENTISTS INVESTIGATE HOW LIVING SYSTEMS WORK AT A RANGE OF LEVELSFROM MOLECULES AND CELLS TO TISSUES AND ORGANSIN RESEARCH ORGANISMS, HUMANS, AND POPULATIONS. ADDITIONALLY, TO ENSURE THE VITALITY AND CONTINUED PRODUCTIVITY OF THE RESEARCH ENTERPRISE, NIGMS PROVIDES LEADERSHIP IN SUPPORTING THE TRAINING OF THE NEXT GENERATION OF SCIENTISTS, ENHANCING THE DIVERSITY OF THE SCIENTIFIC WORKFORCE, AND DEVELOPING RESEARCH CAPACITY THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.
