This proposed project will address the goal of the NEPQR-CFPA program through the development of the New England Nursing Clinical Faculty and Preceptor Academy. The academy will increase the nursing workforce by recruiting, training, and supporting skilled qualified clinical nursing faculty and preceptors who work in a variety of care settings in rural and/or underserved areas across Region I. This application seeks a funding preference as it "substantially benefits rural populations" as documented in Att. 8.

This collaborative partnership proposal builds on the successes and lessons learned through long-term efforts to build the healthcare workforce. This includes the applicant, the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School's Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing, the UMass Clinical Faculty Development Center's Teaching of Tomorrow, and the MassAHEC Network. The MassAHEC Network brings long-term connections with the HRSA funded AHEC programs and centers across Region I and through them, their academic and clinical partners to implement and sustain this project. The AHEC programs in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, Vermont, and New Hampshire and other partners have provided letters of support.

Objective 1: Training Curriculum Development: Implement and adapt an annual Teaching of Tomorrow conference with clinical faculty and preceptor training curriculum to increase the knowledge and skillsets of 40-50 nursing preceptors annually; 190 over the grant period.

Objective 2: Support Services: Provide a menu of support services, including academic, peer, and social supports, to facilitate and maintain the success of clinical faculty and preceptors, including the implementation of strategies to improve resiliency and well-being to prevent burnout throughout the nursing pipeline.

Objective 3: Recruitment and Retention: Develop, share, and sustain successful strategies to recruit, train, develop, and support and retain a minimum of 20 nurse preceptors per AHEC partner (15 in year 1, 5 in year 2) and 15 each year at the GSN and across Region I.

Objective 4: Financial Support: Provide financial support including stipends for 210 and no-cost training to 210+ nursing clinical faculty and preceptors during the grant period to promote retention as a preceptor and to address the multi-faceted needs of the nursing education workforce.

Objective 5: Post Training Employment: Support the retention, and if needed, the employment, of newly trained clinical faculty and preceptors with employment opportunities within partnering clinical sites.

Objective 6: Collaborative Partners: Enhance and create collaborative (academic, practice, and community) partnerships across the six NE states in Region I led by AHEC partnership liaisons to provide preceptor and preceptee training opportunities, contribute to curriculum development and implementation, didactic training and clinical coordination, and oversight of clinical faculty and nurse preceptor training and development.
