Overview

Grant Description
Ripta is seeking to obligate $5088254 in FY18 FTA Section 5339 funds to rehabilitate the East Side Tunnel located in Providence, Rhode Island. Of this total, $3500000 will come from Section 5339 funds appropriated to the state of Rhode Island, and the remaining $1588254 will come from the Urbanized Area Apportionments to Providence RI-MA UZA ($1562866) and Norwich-New London CT-RI UZA ($25388).

The 2000 foot long tunnel is critical to Ripta's operations, with seven routes traveling through the tunnel carrying approximately 10% of all riders. Ripta will provide a 20% match using Ripta operating funds (gas tax).

Scope of work:
Repairs will be made to the steel structure, spalling or cracked concrete, drainage system, and pavement. Improvements will also be made to lighting. In addition, steps will be taken to improve the safety and security of the tunnel to ensure a safe experience for Ripta to operate in and for the public. These repairs will ensure the tunnel remains in a state of good repair.
