Overview
Grant Description
1. Award purpose - The FCCL also puts significant effort toward research and conducts experiments that yield information on the basic biology of delta smelt as well as applied information.
In addition to on-site projects, the recipient has enabled research to move forward by making delta smelt of all ages available.
2. Activities to be performed - The objectives of the project are to:
I. Maintain a genetically managed delta smelt refuge population as a continued safeguard against species extinction in the wild.
II. Expand the production capacity and produce genetically managed delta smelt for supplementation.
III. Assist with supplementation tasks at the FCCL.
IV. Conduct research on hatchery operations and production of delta smelt.
V. Conduct and facilitate research on delta smelt at the FCCL.
VI. Produce a supply of all life stages for research purposes.
3. Expected deliverable or outcome -
Task 1 - Project management.
Task 2 - Adaptive management of delta smelt refuge population.
Task 3 - Genetic management and monitoring of the delta smelt refuge population.
Task 4 - Expand delta smelt production capacity.
Task 5 - Support delta smelt supplementation.
Task 6 - Support and supply fish to CASS approved projects.
Task 7 - Public service and outreach.
4. Intended beneficiary(ies) - As a benefit to the public, this project contributes to maintaining a genetically diverse population of delta smelt within a refuge setting which represents a population bank for future rehabilitation of the species.
The study results will assist in preventing the extinction of a federally and state listed fish species and provide scientific information for use in recovery efforts with which to train the next generation of scientists who will work to help improve scientific understanding and science-based management of public resources.
Results of the investigations will also be available for operational and management decisions affecting the Central Valley Project, implementation of the delta smelt biological opinion and development of other fish and water management strategies.
5. Subrecipient activities - There are no subrecipients for this award.
