Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
The recipient will complete planning and preliminary design activities for its Pure Water Southern California program (project) to beneficially reuse wastewater from Los Angeles County Sanitation District that currently is being discharged to the Pacific Ocean. Drought conditions in the region have led to severe reductions in Colorado River runoff and unprecedented low imports from State Water Project.
The project is expected to provide a drought-resilient water supply to 19 million people, which includes six million people living within disadvantaged communities and multiple tribal communities. The recipient is spearheading a transformative initiative through the project to bolster the region's water supply resilience against drought. The project is anticipated to produce 150 million gallons per day (MGD), which is estimated to serve over half a million households annually in the Southern California region.
Notably, the project is one of the globe's most extensive recycled water projects, showcasing a pivotal move towards sustainable water management. Under this agreement, the recipient will develop a feasibility study, in accordance with Reclamations Water Management and Development 11-01 and Temporary Reclamation Manual Release 28, complete preliminary design activities associated with the initial conveyance reaches (Reach 1 and 2) and sidestream centrate treatment, and program management activities to advance the project.
