Project Grant

Overview

Grant Description
San Benito County Water District (SBCWD) is implementing the Accelerated Drought Response Project (ADROP), which is the first phase of the North San Benito Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) Project.

ADROP will be completed by November 2026 and is the focus of the Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 United States Bureau of Reclamation (USBR) Small Surface Water and Groundwater Storage Projects funding request.

ADROP will provide for injection and storage of up to 2,700 acre-feet per year (AFY) of treated Central Valley Project (CVP) water in wet years with an average recovery of 1,035 AFY of stored water.

ADROP will consist of up to five ASR wells (allowing injection and recovery using the same wells), expansion of the West Hills Water Treatment Plant (WHWTP) and construction of pipelines to convey injection and recovery water between the five ASR wells, WHWTP, and the Sunnyslope County Water District (Sunnyslope), City of Hollister (Hollister), and City of San Juan Bautista (San Juan Bautista) distribution systems.

If awarded, the USBR grant will be used to partially fund the ADROP with the remainder being paid by SBCWD and by matching funds from grants awarded by the State of California.

Funds will partially cover engineering design, land acquisitions, environmental permitting, construction, construction management, public outreach, and facilities startup for work conducted from November 15, 2021 to November 15, 2026.

Funding from USBR will allow accelerated implementation of ADROP.
