Grant Description
FACILITATING ACCELERATED SCIENCE AND TRANSLATION FOR TB REGIMEN DEVELOPMENT (FAST-TB) - PROJECT SUMMARY TUBERCULOSIS (TB) REMAINS THE WORLD’S LEADING INFECTIOUS CAUSE OF DEATH, WITH MORE THAN 10 MILLION NEW CASES AND 1.25 MILLION DEATHS EACH YEAR, INCLUDING NEARLY 10,000 CASES ANNUALLY IN THE UNITED STATES. CURRENT TB TREATMENTS ARE LENGTHY, TOXIC, AND DIFFICULT TO DELIVER, AND DRUG-RESISTANT TB IS A GROWING GLOBAL THREAT. ALTHOUGH THE TB DRUG PIPELINE IS MORE PROMISING THAN EVER, FRAGMENTED DATA, LACK OF SHARED STANDARDS, AND LIMITED TOOLS FOR DECISION-MAKING CONTINUE TO SLOW PROGRESS. THE FACILITATING ACCELERATED SCIENCE AND TRANSLATION FOR TB REGIMEN DEVELOPMENT (FAST-TB) PROGRAM WILL ADDRESS THIS GAP BY CREATING COMMUNITY-WIDE INFRASTRUCTURE AND DURABLE RESOURCES THAT ACCELERATE THE EVALUATION, PRIORITIZATION, AND ADOPTION OF NEW TB REGIMENS. FAST-TB IS ORGANIZED INTO FOUR INTEGRATED TRACKS. THE KNOWLEDGE INTEGRATION FOR TB TREATMENT (KITT) TRACK WILL ESTABLISH A SECURE, GOVERNED FRAMEWORK FOR INFORMATION SHARING ACROSS TRIAL NETWORKS AND INDUSTRY PARTNERS. THE GLOBAL FORUM FOR BIOMARKERS TO ACCELERATE SIMPLER TB TREATMENT (GOFAST) TRACK WILL COORDINATE STANDARDS AND PRIORITIES FOR BIOMARKER EVALUATION AND DRUG RESISTANCE ASSAYS. THE POPULATION AND COST-EFFECTIVENESS (PACE) TRACK WILL GENERATE FLEXIBLE TRANSMISSION AND COST- EFFECTIVENESS MODELS TO GUIDE TRIAL DESIGN AND POLICY. THE RESEARCH TO TRANSLATE AND YIELD EVIDENCE INTO PRACTICE (RELAY) TRACK WILL IDENTIFY IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES AND DEVELOP TOOLS TO SUPPORT RAPID UPTAKE OF NEW REGIMENS. TOGETHER, THESE TRACKS WILL DELIVER SHARED DATA RESOURCES, CONSENSUS FRAMEWORKS, MODELING TOOLS, OUTCOME LIBRARIES, AND IMPLEMENTATION TEMPLATES. THESE RESOURCES WILL REDUCE DUPLICATION, IMPROVE COMPARABILITY ACROSS STUDIES, AND PROVIDE STANDARDIZED EVIDENCE TO INFORM REGULATORS, POLICY MAKERS, AND IMPLEMENTERS. FAST-TB IS LED BY UCSF’S CENTER FOR TUBERCULOSIS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CRDF GLOBAL, WITH ENGAGEMENT FROM INTERNATIONAL NETWORKS, INDUSTRY, AND COMMUNITY STAKEHOLDERS. BY DELIVERING BROADLY ACCESSIBLE RESOURCES, FAST-TB WILL ACCELERATE THE AVAILABILITY OF SHORTER, SAFER TB TREATMENTS AND STRENGTHEN PUBLIC HEALTH IN THE UNITED STATES AND WORLDWIDE.
