Project Grant

Overview

Grant Description
Grovers Hill Irrigation District (GHID) originally conveyed water to its users via more than 16.5 miles of concrete and earthen canals. The 125-year-old concrete and earthen canal conveyance system is in the process of being upgraded to a High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) pipeline system.

This four-phase construction project was partially funded by a Bureau of Reclamation WaterSMART grant that GHID received in 2020. Phase 1 was completed in 2020 and implemented 16,460 lineal feet of HDPE pipeline on a portion of the lower canal. Phase 2 was completed in 2021 and replaced the middle canal in its entirety with the installation of approximately 20,799 lineal feet of HDPE pipeline.

Phase 3 and Phase 4 construction is currently underway, replacing 17,751 lineal feet of concrete-lined canal with HDPE pipeline. Construction of Phase 4 is estimated to be complete before April 15th, 2023. The primary purpose of the four-phase construction project was to reduce the water lost from evaporation and seepage by replacing the existing earthen canals with HDPE pipe.

The efficiency of the system has also been enhanced through the installation of necessary valves and meters to track water usage of the farmers and gardeners through all four phases of the project. Conducting this System Operation Review (SOR) will enable GHID to assess and measure water usage, water availability, system improvements to reduce sediment, improve delivery through automated systems, and improve water conservation efforts.
