Grant Description
1. Purpose:
This project contributes to the maintenance and improvement of fish habitat with a goal of increasing populations of Chinook salmon and steelhead trout by replenishing spawning gravel and improving rearing habitat in the upper Sacramento River. It will address factors limiting fish populations in freshwater and contribute to the recovery of listed salmonids.
In response to the diminished habitat, agencies and stakeholders that work on the Sacramento River have been collaborating to identify side channels that can be reconnected at wintertime low flows. River Partners will improve spawning and rearing habitat for salmonids at individual project locations along the mainstem Sacramento River in Shasta, Tehama, Glenn, Butte, and Colusa counties.
2. Activities to be performed at each of the six sites (Tobiasson Island, McClure Creek, Wilson Landing, Indian Fishery, Dos Arroyos, and Willow Bend):
- Planning, design, permitting, and outreach
- Construction
- Baseline and post-construction monitoring & reporting
3. Deliverables and expected outcomes:
The objective of this project is to restore side channels, floodplains, and spawning habitats to improve adult spawning and juvenile rearing habitats for freshwater life stages of anadromous salmonids in the Sacramento River and its tributaries.
4. Intended beneficiary(ies): The public
