Grant Description
Application Purpose: The purpose of this low and no emission vehicle award is to purchase electric buses that will replace exiting diesel buses and the construction of a dual solar-powered charging station as an initiative to bring sustainable transit utilizing clean and green technology to promote reliable efficient and clean transportation.

Reduce energy consumption and greater efficiency while providing a smoother and quieter ride; reduce harmful emissions including carbon emissions or particulate matter emissions while providing a positive impact of local air quality; purchase six (6) new technology battery-electric buses that comply with all FTA requirements s from a qualified transit vehicle manufacture to replace diesel buses.

Construct a dual solar powered charging station to service two vehicles at a time; and dedicate 5% of the budget for workforce development to retain and develop workforce in line with the new future technology and meeting the training needs of the workforce to work with this cutting-edge technology in a collaborative with the union colleges and applicable workforce organizations.

The project (PRIME) ultimately reduces energy consumption harmful emissions and direct carbon emissions. Activities Performed: The purchase four (4) no emission buses and the construction of two (2) dual solar powered charging station for these buses; expected outcomes: For the Metropolitan Bus Authority this will be the first experience with zero emission buses through a pilot program.

This operation will include the purchase of four (4) buses to operate our high frequency route in the San Juan area. The charging infrastructure will be installed in the bus depot and in one terminal. These charging stations will primarily use photovoltaic energy. The integration of electric buses will contribute to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions promote cleaner air and help address the climate crisis.

Moreover it will signal to the private sector and the population in general the importance of moving towards no emission transportation options. Intended beneficiaries: Puerto Rico would benefit from purchasing electric vehicles in an effort to improve the safety and reliability of bus service while at the same time provide for a modernized bus fleet and bus charging station with the most advance technology to help improve the air quality and combat climate change in Puerto Rico.

THE LOW OR NO EMISSION COMPETITIVE PROGRAM PROVIDES FUNDING FOR THE PURCHASE OR LEASE OF ZERO-EMISSION AND LOW-EMISSION TRANSIT BUSES AS WELL AS ACQUISITION CONSTRUCTION AND LEASING OF REQUIRED SUPPORTING FACILITIES.
