Project Grant

Overview

Grant Description
Application Purpose: To support the operations of fifteen 60-foot BEBs in BRT service.

Fifteen 150 kW (slow) electric chargers and one 450 kW (fast) electric charger, along with associated infrastructure, are proposed to be procured and installed at the East Liberty Bus Garage.

Activities Performed: The 150 kW electric chargers will be installed inside of the garage to provide overnight charging of batteries while the buses are being stored. The 450 kW electric charger will be installed outside to provide quick recharging of the BEBs between runs during the day.

Expected Outcomes: This infrastructure will directly support the operation of these fifteen battery-electric buses, as well as provide support for the future expansion of electric bus operations.

Intended Beneficiaries: Allegheny County residents. Air quality in the region, including Allegheny County and much of the BRT corridor, is unhealthy. The region is non-attainment for ozone, Allegheny County is in non-attainment for PM2.5 and SO2, and is a maintenance area for CO. In 2020, the American Lung Association's ranking of metropolitan areas placed Pittsburgh 16th and 8th worst nationally for eight-hour and annual PM2.5 pollution, respectively.
