Applicant name: California Department of Parks and Recreation

Descriptive title of applicant's project: Beyer Park, City of San Diego, Parks

California Department of Parks and Recreation will subgrant the LWCF award to the development of Beyer Park by the City of San Diego Parks.

The project includes pedestrian walkways, a dog park, a comfort station, a parking lot, picnic areas with concrete benches, picnic tables, chairs, log benches, site boulders, BBQs, trash receptacles, security and sports field lighting, and multi-use athletic fields.

Between 2017 and 2021, ten meetings were held to incorporate public input into the design process.

A total of 277 community members participated in these meetings.

Most meetings were held at night to accommodate community members' schedules.

From 2017 to 2018, meetings were held at local recreation centers.

Due to the pandemic, meetings from 2020 to 2021 were held virtually.

Meetings were advertised to the public via mailings to the surrounding community, via social media, and the City of San Diego's Parks and Recreation website.

In 2017, the City of San Diego first went to the community without project plans and solicited the community's input on what they wanted to see in their park.

The residents were asked for feedback on what amenities and features they wanted to see included.

The City developed three site plans for community input based on this feedback.

Based on this input, these plans were refined into a preferred concept plan for the park, including the amenities and facilities requested by the community.

Additionally, at the 2017 meetings, a picture board with all types of amenities and design styles was presented to the community.

Residents were asked to place a dot sticker next to the images that best reflected their envisioned park.

Questionnaires were also distributed, asking what they felt embodied their community's identity and what images came to mind when they thought of a great park.

In three 2021 meetings, participants were shown options for specific design features and asked for their preferences and additional ideas.

They were also asked about themes the park design should express to reflect community identity, heritage, and sense of place.
