Project Grant
Overview
Grant Description
The North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources will subgrant the ORLP to renovate Nocho Park. Renovations will provide much needed improvements to a historically under-served area in East Greensboro.
This project includes replacing existing restrooms and upgrading a multi-purpose field to regulation size, replacing and relocating playground equipment with an innovative nature play area, adding a full-size covered basketball pavilion, amphitheater, wide pathways, relaxation area including hammock poles, additional parking, sustainable landscaping, and storm-water control devices.
The site will feature multiple community gathering areas with bosque seating, picnic tables, bench seating, two shade structures, and lighting throughout. Nocho Park is the outdoor recreation component of the new envisioned Windsor Chavis Nocho Community Complex (WCNCC) combining the Windsor Recreation Center, Vance Chavis Library, and Nocho Park into a community heart for East Greensboro.
The WCNCC will be a facility like none other. Rooted in the richness of community and unification, the new landmark facility will radically rethink the concept of library and recreation centers through the dissolving of formal boundaries.
The project is located in Nocho Park, once considered the premier historic neighborhood of East Greensboro. The neighborhood was home to many middle-to-high income black residents who built attractive houses, new schools, and even a hospital. In the 1950s, a city-wide thoroughfare plan divided the community and separated Nocho Park and Windsor Recreation Center.
This project will reconnect the sites into a dynamic new facility that will be an exciting destination and source of pride for the neighbors, the city, and the region.
