Grant Description
The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks will sub-grant this award to the City of Independence. The city will further develop Central Park Sports Complex with new baseball and softball fields, new soccer fields, a restroom concession facility, storage building, fitness court, multi-use sports field, synthetic turf infields, fencing, scoreboards, dugouts, paved parking stalls with a storm drainage system, lighting, park support facilities, and landscaping. The site will be redesigned to move the ballfields out of the flood zone to extend the lifespan of the facilities.
Other improvements include accessible walk paths and completing the existing skate park. Additionally, a new playground, new shelter, and restroom will be added in the new T-ball Blast Ball area, and the existing basketball court will be replaced. In addition, they will add new batting cages and a disc golf course. This will provide new and improved recreation facilities for the community and those visiting.
